Key release features

The key usability and technology enhancements of Omega 2023.1 include the following:

Geophysical enhancements

Non-uniform environmental noise suppression (NUENS)

  • New seismic function module (SFM) that performs the attenuation of environmental and ambient noise on non-uniformly sampled land data, applicable for 2D or 3D land geometries, and ocean bottom seismic (OBS), depending on acquisition geometry.

SIMULT_VEL_COORD_EST & SWC_APPLY

  • Enhancements to improve quality with the ability to pick the first-order water-layer multiple and supply an input of the bathymetry enables better separation of the different terms in the inversion. The addition of a robust weighted least squares solver enables the inversion to arrive more quickly at the correct solution.

    GSMP (General Surface Multiple Prediction)

  • GSMP “Ray Trace” option models water bottom reflection on the fly to generate Generalized Deterministic Water-layer Demultiple (GDWD) model for shallow-water demultiple.  This improves both the accuracy of the model and usability of the process. It also provides better sampling of the water bottom event, including near offsets when compared to fully data-driven Surface Related Multiple Elimination (SRME).

    MIGR_KIRCH_DEPTH_PSF

  • New options to enable offset vector tile (OVT) binning based entirely on data literals, removing the need for geometry databases, and performance and memory optimization for ocean bottom node (OBN)/OBS acquisitions.

    RTM

  • Mirror migration option—an extension to RTM that mirrors the model above the free-surface allowing for migrations of down-going wavefields by the method of images. This new option simplifies the workflow for OBN migration of down-going data.
  • Dip guided subsurface azimuth angle gathers (SAAGs)—an option within RTM to partition the image into subsurface azimuth/angle gathers using an externally provided dip field in conjunction with the estimated source side direction field. This update offers improved angle gather quality and a reduction of residual or un-binned energy.

    FWI

  • New curvilinear FWI solves the wave equation for seismic imaging and inversion by mapping irregular acquisition surfaces to a horizontal plane for finite-difference (FD) computations. This improves the quality of updates for land applications, with reduced runtimes and cost.

    Performance enhancements

Graphics processing unit (GPU) performance improvements for SFMs including FWI_TD (tilted transverse isotropy [TTI] kernel optimizations—acoustic, TTI GPU kernel has been further optimized to perform better during inversion, particularly at higher frequencies), and added support for A100 GPUs (MIGR_KIRCH_TIME)

    Usability and functionality updates

  • Improvements to enable faster and more robust submission of jobs using batch submission, with observed x14 reduced TAT when submitting 1000s of serial jobs in a single submission.
  • Improved usability and functionality for the SeisFlow, SeisView 2D seismic data viewer and analysis software, Stage Jobs Viewer, and Multiple Attribute Display applications.
  • Updated ZGY support: SFMs which read/write ZGY format have been updated to use OpenZGY which is an open-source library (derived from the SLB proprietary ZGY format) contributed to OSDU.
  • Efficiency updates to seismic function modules (SFMs)

  • The following SFMs have been updated to improve efficiencies and impact TAT

    IDHRMOD, TRACE_SELECT, TRCMATH, IRREGULAR_INTERP_AA (MPFI), and GENERAL_RADON.

  • Improved functionality for many seismic function modules includes CIP_DIFF, EM_MODELING, RECORD_EXTRACT, XIMP.
  • Improved usability for some seismic function modules includes OUTPUT_GENERAL, ROTATE_3C_ANALY, WEM_MOD,
  • New optimal resource management using machine learning for FWI and RTM

    VISTA IVA

  • Many significant improvements in usability and stability for the VISTA IVA application.

EMB and prestack seismic interpretation (PSI)

  • EMB plug-in for Petrel software has been updated with the Omega 2023.1 release.  Key updates provide improved stability for volcan model display, usability updates for the property editing toolkit, and a new option in the ray trace and illumination (RTI) plugin to output rays, based on the display filter.
  • PSI plug-in for Petrel software has also been updated. Key updates provide improvements in stability for prestack window display and mute picking, and improved stability and quality for prestack events.

Target users

This suite of tools encompasses Omega geophysical data processing software and Ocean™ software development framework plug-ins within Petrel software and is designed for users to condition, process, model, image, interpret, invert, and apply AVO modeling on a large or small scale and is applicable to geophysicists and geologists.
